As most of our work and research is based on NSW Marine Parks and Batemans Marine Park (BMP) in particular we will focus mostly on the creation and current state of BMP and the main players in the NSW Marine Parks game.

First a little background on the push for Marine Protected Areas and why such measures are needed in some countries.

Coral reef demolished by blast fishing.

Marine Protected Areas

Or "Marine Parks" as they have come to be known, are a governmental response to world wide pressure form environmental groups, some of them quite radical and extremist.

The theory goes like this.

The worlds population is growing, placing ever increasing pressure on our limited natural resources. We must act now to make sure this increasing pressure is not allowed to destroy our natural world.

Sounds logical!

Governments around the world heard this call and wanting to be seen to be doing their bit for the environment signed on to the proposed cure,

Set aside 20 to 30% of the worlds waters where no human interaction is allowed.

Australia is party to such an agreement and all it's states encouraged to go along for the ride.

Our oceans, rivers and estuaries do have problems that need urgent attention fortunately nothing on the scale that warrants the type of exclusion required in other parts of the world. Unfortunately the current NSW Marine Park model does nothing to extra address those needs.

So now lets focus on Marine Parks New South Wales Style.
