I heard some interesting news on Tuesday, I have included two recordings below one from radio 2ec and the next from ABC Southeast.

School of Yellow Tail Scad. I have a feeling there may be more that 30."Local divers team up with a leading environment
group to survey fish in our new marine park."

I do admire the divers for there volunteer work, though I question the motives of the environment group involved.

More soon on the NPA, their methods, secret meetings and agenda.

It still seems that the whole marine park process in NSW has the cart before the horse. Surely it would be far better to have done a thorough survey prior to declaring the park, to understand what lives here and how it is coping after almost 200 years of European settlement and learn what may need protection, from what and then decide how best to go about it.

Professor Robert KearneyOn the 12th of September, Over a month ago Professor Robert Kearney (well respected marine biologist) caused quite a stir by simply stating the facts in an address to The Australian Society for Fish Biology, Canberra.

"Many citizens of the Batemans region have been hoodwinked into believing that the proposal for this park was actually based on sound science and that the park will deliver considerable benefits to biodiversity conservation and recreational fishing"

The first reaction from government and the radicals was to hold their breath and wait till the stink blew away. When it didn't, their next step was to send out soon to be Ex-Director of NPWS Tony Fleming, knowing that if it backfired they could distance themselves form what he said. The best Tony could do was point to so called "scientific consensus"  on marine protected areas.

minister assisting the minister for the environmentDue to continued requests from CRA and others for a scientific rebuttal to Prof Kearney's paper, The minister assisting the minister for the environment, Verity Firth was next to try and make it go away. View this attempt here. Unfortunately what she had to say was nearly word for word what Mr Fleming had said which amounted to nothing, but it was interesting to see her mention the same European consensus statement.

Now three so called leading environment groups NPA (National Parks Association) NCC Nature Conservation Council and The Wilderness Society have decided it's time to put their magic spin on things to make it all go away. Here

Local Papers

These links open in a new page and are a search of both local papers for each year since the declaration of the park.

Not everything that has appeared in the papers can be found on line for reasons only known to the papers.

The Narooma News seems to have a more comprehensive coverage

Morning in Batemans Bay I wanted to take this chance to post an update now that the website is slowly taking shape.

My name is Dave I'm a committee member of Coastal Rights Association and since I'm not too bad at finding my way around a computer I've landed the job of setting up the CRA website.

Thanks for looking us up, as you can tell there is not a lot here as yet but I will be adding to it every day, so pop back often and watch as it all comes together. At the moment I am working on the Marine Parks page, there will also be news articles, audio and video recorded through out the "consultation" process all to be added as time permits.

There are plans for a forum for discussion, question and answers etc. If there is anything you would like to see feel free to contact me. When I get the chance to write it my contact details as well as other committee members will be on the contacts page.

Dave
